plays mkv but not some advance avi files yet so I am trying to figure a good way to fix that or have a good AVI player, I am installing AVI Codec Pack Pro fromthe above website.

4.  winzip (paid software, instead will try linux environ from Cygwin and sourceforge, wow tar and gunzip works on cygwin, uninstalled winzip)

great, cygwin works perfect and commands tar and gunzip work fine: open Xwin with startxwin — -noclipboard

7. xfig and latex are working perfect  (I have cygwin xfig and MikTeX stand-alone)
